Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I became a patient advocate after years of practicing as a physician and witnessing firsthand the shortcomings and challenges within the healthcare system. As a doctor, I saw how patients struggled with insurance issues, confusing medical terminology, and fragmented care that made their health journeys more stressful than they needed to be. I often found myself trying to help them navigate a system that wasn’t designed to support them holistically. But it wasn’t until one patient encounter that I truly understood the full impact of what was missing.
They had been suffering from years of debilitating pain, seeing specialist after specialist, undergoing endless tests, yet never receiving answers. Their financial situation was crumbling from missed work, and they felt lost in a system that didn’t seem to delivery any solutions. When I sat with them and simply listened, something shifted. For the first time, they felt truly heard. Shortly after our encounter, I was able to connect them with the right care, and their life began to change. It was then I realized that patients needed more than just clinical expertise. They needed an advocate who would fight for their rights, explain their options, and ensure they weren’t falling through the cracks.
This experience led me to shift my focus from practicing medicine to becoming a patient advocate.
