Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My journey as a senior advocate began with the deeply personal experience of caring for my mother, Luttie, as she faced numerous health challenges, including dementia. Through these experiences, I learned how critical it is to have a vigilant advocate to ensure seniors receive the quality care they deserve.

In 2018, my mother faced a severe health crisis when she developed sepsis from an infected bug bite. Despite the alarming symptoms, the initial plan from her medical team was to send her home. However, I sensed that something far more serious was at play. I advocated persistently, urging the doctors to investigate further. Ultimately, my insistence led to a diagnosis of sepsis—a life-threatening condition that could have been overlooked. After her recovery, a doctor thanked me for advocating, acknowledging that my persistence may have saved her life. This experience highlighted for me how easily serious conditions can go undetected, especially in seniors, and how essential it is to have someone advocating for a thorough evaluation.

More recently, my mother was placed on hospice care due to advanced dementia. During this time, she developed a UTI, pneumonia and dehydration, which added significant complications to her already delicate health. Once again, I found myself in the role of her advocate, ensuring she received the appropriate care and comfort. These challenges underscored just how vulnerable seniors are to rapidly worsening health conditions and the critical need for attentive, proactive support.

My experiences with my mother taught me the importance of questioning, pushing for thorough assessments, and advocating for seniors’ needs. Many families face similar struggles but may not know how to navigate these complexities. Today, as a senior advocate, I use the insights I gained from my mother’s journey to help other families make informed decisions and ensure their loved ones receive compassionate, comprehensive care.

My mission is to empower families to navigate the healthcare system confidently and to make sure that every senior receives the care and respect they deserve.
