Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
Barbara Abruzzo RN, BCPA is a Registered Nurse, Certified Patient Advocate and Medical Decision Support Specialist. A social entrepreneur responsible for creating, building and leading three revolutionary healthcare service companies over the last 30 years.
Barbara started her professional career as an intensive care nurse before she realized she wanted to affect change within the healthcare system by going into the business side of healthcare, first as a Vice-President for an national hospital staffing and homecare company, then by founding both a regional hospital critical care staffing business as well as a pediatric critical-care homecare service that cared for ventilator-dependent infants in the home.
As a young child, Barbara had been hospitalized numerous times for orthopedic surgeries beginning when she was just nine years old. In her 40’s, she found out that she was challenged with a genetic peripheral nervous system disorder. The combination of her extensive nursing experience, managing her hospital staffing and homecare businesses, along with being an ongoing patient gave her a unique perspective of the patient’s experience from multiple vantage points.
After selling her hospital staffing and homecare businesses in 1994, she found herself being asked for professional healthcare guidance by family and friends. Barbara was formerly a clinical instructor and was easily able to counsel and guide these individuals as to how to find the right and best care. She founded Livingwell Care Navigation in 1999 and built her complex-care navigation business into an industry leader using her unique approach to navigating the healthcare system which combined both her personal and professional skill sets and experiences.
As a pioneer in the health advocacy industry having seen the need for this type of service long before others, Barbara continues to lead and expand Livingwell's success based upon her unique ability to think outside the box and across disciplines. Her impeccable standards, ability to take an idea from concept to launch, and unique gift for developing her businesses into an industry leaders are apparent. By leveraging her emotional intelligence, she continues to attract the best and brightest talent and earn their respect and trust which always has set her companies far above the competition.
Barbara and her team are committed to helping Livingwell's clients find their own path to health and healing: an informed path to finding the right and best care so that they can heal on all levels and return to a state of vitality and well-being.
