Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I have been an oncology nurse for over 35 years - I have served in administration, as a floor nurse, as an administrator, program developer, and case management leader in national/international hospital and insurance settings throughout the country. I began thinking about starting an advocacy business in 2008 after witnessing many patients struggle with care coordination, decision-making, communication, and poor-quality care or follow-up in large hospital settings and in community settings. In 2010, I experienced a personal event after my father, who had stage IV cancer and lived about four hours away, was admitted through the emergency room with metastatic disease to his brain for pain management. Unfortunately, his oncologist was out of the country, and her colleagues in her practice refused to address critical aspects of his care. Upon arrival at the hospital, I found my 6'4" father in a small room with his legs hanging over the bed, writhing in pain, and his wife in the corner crying because she could not get any answers from the medical team. It took two days of my efforts in taking charge - calling their very experienced pain team to manage his pain appropriately, calling for a family meeting to discuss what was clearly the need for end-of-life care, arranging for hospice, and moving him to a larger room on a proper bed to promote comfort. At the end, my father was pain-free and at peace, and able to allow his family time to help comfort him as he transitioned. It took me another two years to formulate my business plan - and, as a maverick in 2012, I started my concierge cancer business.
