Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My path to becoming a patient advocate began with deeply personal experiences. I found myself in the role of a caregiver for my mom who was diagnosed with asthma after the birth of my oldest brother. Her condition was chronic and often debilitating leading to countless trips to the emergency room and long hospital stays. I vividly remember accompanying her to the hospital, sitting by her side, and naturally stepping into a role of supporting her but also patients around us. At that time I didn't even know what "advocacy " was, but I was already doing it-fiercely and from the heart.
Years later, my passion for helping others grew into a career. I started as a comfort care aide in a local hospital, and within six months, I transitioned into a role as a patient care assistant (PCA), a position that allowed me to care for people directly, providing them with the attention and compassion the deserved.
However, many years later a car accident left me with the reality of accepting that I could no longer provide the care my patients needed. It was a challenging time, but it also opened a new door for me. I founded a non-medical companion care agency, where I matched companions with elderly clients seeking in-home support. Over the next 10 years, I not only built a successful business but also found myself advocating once-again- this time for clients and their families, ensuring their voices were heard and their needs were met.
After a decade of running my agency, I felt a strong pull to return to my roots of advocacy in a more focused way. That's when my journey as a professional patient advocate began. My personal experiences as a caregiver, my professional background in healthcare, and my unwavering commitment to helping others have shaped me into the advocate I am today.
