Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I created Prepare to Care – Emergency Companions, LLC with the mission to help people age and transition with dignity and grace. Since I started my journey as a patient advocate in 1994, I have often found that elders do not experience having control and choice in their aging process, and their deaths in particular. But I initially learned this lesson the hard way--I didn’t hear my grandma’s wishes around her deteriorating health, and her last year ended up being very difficult. She had cancer and I encouraged her to have surgery to remove the tumor. She was very clear that she was ready to stop treatment and ‘to let go.’ I thought that she was saying that because she didn’t feel well and that after she had the surgery she would feel better and be glad she had done it. But she ended up with a condition that caused her much suffering. At one point she asked what she had done to deserve this and it was then that I realized, and told her, “It wasn’t anything you did—it was because I loved you too much and I didn’t want to let you go.” I now know that I didn’t have a full enough perspective on this. I did the best I could at that time with the knowledge I had, but I wish that I could have had more understanding and guidance around it then. That is something that I now try to help provide for families—-helping people become clear about how they want to proceed in their aging process and helping them communicate that with their families. There are also other aspects to my company—I noticed that I often saw elder people going to the hospital alone, and thus created Prepare to Care -- Emergency Companions. While I created the business with these two concerns in mind, what I found is that every person’s path has its own set of concerns and I find myself solving problems, helping in decision making and connecting families to resources so they can maximize the benefits available to them. And at the heart of it all, with each transition, we must allow consideration for each individual’s sense of legacy and choice.
