Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
One night during my ER shift at 1 a.m., an 80-year-old man was brought in by ambulance, confused. EMS had been called by a neighbor who found him outside, slurring his words and disoriented, and they called 911. He arrived in the same state, unable to tell us the date, where he was, or any of his medical history. He had no family present, with his children living in Florida and Colorado. Concerned he was having a stroke, we sent him for a CT scan of his brain and ran numerous tests. With no information about his health, we had to wait for other test results and clues before starting critical treatments. He was indeed suffering from a stroke. In that moment, as I watched him scared and vulnerable, I realized the immense need for Doctor Daughters and the services we provide. The support and information we offer could have assisted EMS, the hospital team, expedited his treatment, and informed his family about the situation.
