Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
On January 13, 2010, my husband was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Alzheimer’s dementia at the age of 58. This prompted me to become a health advocate, fighting for his care and well-being.
I became a health advocate before fully understanding the role. I managed the care of my husband and many family members and sought the best resources for each one in researching reliable health information and focusing on trustworthy and comprehensible resources. Advocating for their needs to remain comfortably in their homes, which included hospital beds, wheelchairs, nurse visits, and aides when necessary, as they faced significant and chronic health challenges from conditions that included Alzheimer’s dementia, diabetes, heart disease, brain tumor, memory loss, and increased dependency on others for their care. Ensuring assistance with doctor appointments, bill payments, grocery shopping, in-home safety, and finances was essential. As each one’s health deteriorated and became terminal, advocating the best possible care, by navigating in-home care, rehabilitation facilities, nursing visits from hospitals to hospice was important in maintaining one’s dignity.
Being employed as a medical biller, working in a nursing home, having experience in medical reimbursements, and pursuing a degree in healthcare administration and gerontology provided me with essential medical knowledge and practical experiences related to many diseases and health disparities.
