Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
From Patient to Patient Advocate
Patients deserve, and have the right, to explore options, understand treatment choices, and participate in their own healthcare. I have been there and now am here to help you.
On May 24, 2019, I heard words nobody wants to hear, “You have Invasive Lobular Carcinoma.” My surgeon provided two choices: lumpectomy with radiation or mastectomy without radiation. I had no idea which to choose because I did not know the risks or benefits of either.
Beyond the initial surgical choice, I also did not understand next steps, choices, timeline, or the physical and financial impact of those choices. I quickly learned a breast cancer diagnosis is a game of "hurry up and wait" and waiting is the hardest part.
From there, I embarked upon a mission to educate myself on breast cancer and conducted extensive research online published from highly respected organizations around the world. Topics included breast cancer subtypes, treatments, current research, clinical trials, inequity in healthcare and more. Attendance in various training has enabled participation in a diverse range of volunteer opportunities including grant application preparation, grant review and scoring.
Recently I became a Board Certified Patient Advocate and made the life-changing choice to leave corporate America to pursue full-time patient advocacy and created Private Patient Advocates, Inc., a Texas Corporation.
