Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I was my mother's advocate prior to her transitioning. I was her proxy for all her medical needs, from testing/diagnosis to treatment of care. I facilitated discussions between my mother and medical teams to ensure that her concerns and preferences were understood and considered. I was always there when the medical team conducted their rounds with questions or concerns and new treatment plans. I was the liaison between her, the healthcare providers, specialty doctors and the other disciplinary team members ensuring clear and effective communication. I made sure she understood her diagnosis, treatment options, and the healthcare system. I provided emotional support and counseling to my mother and the entire family members. I communicated and collaborated with her specialty doctors for all her treatment plans. I was the decision maker on all her procedures and/or transition of care.

I am currently my father's advocate for all his medical needs and treatment of care. I educate him about his medical conditions, treatment plans, and potential outcomes. I help him navigate insurance processes, including understanding benefits, filing claims, and addressing denials. I addressed any concerns or complaints my father may have regarding his care or treatment. I coordinate care for his complex and chronic conditions, ensuring he receives appropriate follow-up and continuity of care post-surgery and hospital discharge.

I have a passion for helping others and a commitment to ensuring patients receive the best possible care.
