Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I initially worked in the non-profit sector but shifted gears when a skilled nursing facility was in need of a long term care social worker. I fell in love with geriatric work. My residents became family, many of them needing a hand to hold during some of the most trying phases of their lives. I learned to be an advocate for the people who needed it most: medically complex individuals with little or no support. One resident, Larry, lead the way. He was a fierce and previously independent patient. His trust was hard earned but our friendship grew and I earned the nickname "boss lady" after finally convincing him to let me help resolve some of his issues at the center. He needed the compassion and I needed the fierceness. I was with Larry when he eventually passed on hospice services at the center. I still update him on my progression as a social worker where he is laid to rest. He was one of the first to encourage me to pursue my master's degree.
