Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
It's really very simple: when I go to the car mechanic, and he tells me my car's carburetor needs replacing, I say: "Really? Whatever you say." I have no idea what he's saying. I cannot have an intelligent discussion of my options. This is how most patients feel when talking to a doctor. ONLY, ITS NOT YOUR CAR, ITS YOUR HEALTH THAT'S ON THE LINE.
Over the years I received many calls from friends and family, "My ..... (fill in the blank) hurts terribly! Should I go to the emergency room? Or can it wait? And what type of help do I need?" Later I would question them "What did the doctor say?", and "Did you ask him about...?" So much confusion, so many opportunities lost to improve their well being.
I accompanied my adult son to a specialist, He suggested to try a new (!) drug, I asked "What about this test? " "I guess we can try it" was his response. This test proved to provide the answer and stirred the treatment into an entirely different direction. Much needles suffering was averted (not to speak of time and money saved).

Well educated elderly relatives presented to a new cardiologist. The history they gave had little relationship to reality, Only because I could clarify the history, was the physician able to make the right assessment. The treatment regiment required multiple clarifications, and again and again what happened at home had to be stirred into the right direction. After a number of months of this, with the patient much improved, the physician remarked to me : "I could have never done this without you!"

My father-in-law had a chronic condition. He could not articulate it to provides. I knew that if he was seen by a surgeon, who knew nothing about him, he would take this to be a life threatening situation and take him to emergency surgery. My job was to make sure everyone who saw him in the ER/ hospital was told "This is chronic, do not be alarmed!"
I could go on and on...
