For many years I worked directly with cancer patients and those serving them, as a manager and trainer in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Information department. During this time, I was able to take part in or observe thousands of interactions with patients, families and caregivers impacted by cancer. While each patient’s needs are individual and unique, there were common struggles that many share. These include confusion regarding their cancer diagnosis, testing and treatment; challenges communicating with their medical team; difficulties navigating the health care system; logistical issues like transportation to treatment, and barriers related to insurance coverage and treatment costs. In the midst of dealing with these types of issues, nearly every patient struggles with feelings of distress - fear, anxiety or vulnerability - and many experience unsettling changes in their personal relationships.
My goal is to ease these burdens, so that patients, and their families, can focus on getting the treatment they need and regaining their health.
