Throughout my 30 years as a Registered Nurse, I often found my patients and families increasingly confused, frustrated, feeling overwhelmed and unheard due to a very noticeable breakdown in communication between healthcare providers, patients, and their families. Realizing the necessity to advocate for my patient at the bedside, I made a commitment to myself that would ensure each patient I took care of had a voice that was heard, and each patient would be empowered with the knowledge, tools and resources necessary to successfully navigate across their own care-continuum. Eventually, this lead to my idea of launching my own independent advocacy practice allowing me the ability to continue honoring that commitment, well beyond the bedside.
But It wasn’t until I experienced the healthcare system personally as an advocate for my mother that I understood FIRST HAND the disconnect between provider and patient. I quickly became the primary advocate and liaison between the healthcare team and my family members, leaving me feeling exhausted after spending months, weeks, days and hours making phone calls trying to get needed care, attempting to speak to and/or meet with members of her care team, coordinating and scheduling post acute services and transitional care to the best of my ability, all while trying to resolve billing and insurance discrepancies. It was then I realized and couldn't imagine what it must be like to experience the medical system without a healthcare background and just how important having an expert advocate by your side provides a peace of mind knowing you are not alone!
After the passing of my dear mother I was then more than ever, determined and committed to pursue my passion of patient advocacy. Shortly after….Live+Behealthy Solutions was born!
