After a decade as a cardiovascular nurse caring for both adults and children, I've discovered that patient advocacy has always been at the heart of my practice. From my earliest days at the bedside, my role naturally evolved beyond clinical care to include coordinating treatment plans, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and navigating the complex schedules of tests and procedures. When I stepped onto the unit, my patients became my sole priority—their needs, their understanding, and their journey through the healthcare system.
For eight years, I thrived in the high-pressure environment of the Cardiac ICU, where I honed not only my clinical expertise but also my ability to serve as a bridge between patients and the healthcare system. Seeking new challenges, I transitioned to managing an Atrial Fibrillation Program, which opened my eyes to another dimension of healthcare delivery and administration.
Yet something was missing—the direct connection with patients and their families that had always fueled my passion. I've always believed deeply in the importance of patient education and ensuring that everyone fully understands their plan of care. This realization led me to patient advocacy, where I can leverage my clinical experience and system knowledge to guide patients and their loved ones through the often overwhelming healthcare landscape.
