Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I came to the United States over 10 years ago from Nigeria. One of the challenges I faced was navigating the healthcare system. I was used to walking into a hospital with my parents advocating for me back home in Nigeria either telling the doctor my signs or symptoms and paying out of pocket for any treatment that was warranted. Moreover, healthcare system in Nigeria is not as robust as that of the United States. It was difficult for me to understand how to navigate the healthcare system in the U.S. I remember visiting an urgent care for an immunization that was required by the school and I was told I was to pay out of pocket. I wondered why and asked if my health insurance wouldn’t cover it. The front desk lady looked at me and said I was not an established patient with the urgent care clinic. As confused as I was, I cried because the price was not something I could afford at that moment. Only for a nurse to come out from one of the rooms because she overheard the conversations between me and the front desk lady. The nurse asked if I had a few minutes so she could look into my insurance and let me know what was covered and how to get the vaccine I needed. I sat down and she took her time to go through the system and printed out all the urgent care centers that was in network with my insurance also informed me that the vaccine was covered under my insurance. I thanked her so much and cried. It was the first time someone besides my parents advocated for me. I could not stop telling my family and friends of my experience. As a nurse now, I want to continue to pay it forward in my community by advocating for patients and their families.
