Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I became an advocate before I even realized I was advocating. As a student doing my clinical rotations, I felt the need to help patients and their families as they tried to figure out what to do next and how to do it. They had this look of hopelessness and defeat. When I was talking with them, they would have questions about insurance, financial assistance, understanding what the doctor said, further testing, medications and the lists went on and on. I would do what I could to find the appropriate professionals and information to address these questions. However, it simply wasn’t enough. They needed someone to break it down and assist them in a manageable plan and prepare for the future challenges

I have experienced that feeling with both of my children with disabilities. I had to learn the laws in education and advocate for them through their educational careers.

They each had very different disabilities one with mental health spending 6 mo a year in hospitals and the other time in out patient settings from the time he was 4. The other with dyslexia and the state we lived in at the time did not acknowledge dyslexia as a learning disability. His dyslexia wasn’t only with letters and numbers, but with memory and recall leading to behavioral problems.

I was a single mother fighting for protection for my kids from abuse, working 3 jobs, sleeping every other day to support us while trying to make sure my boys received the care and education they needed and deserved.
Sadly, I remember very little time spent enjoying my children as they grew up. I was so focused on navigating the healthcare system, education system and the court system to ensure their well being. To this day, I don’t know how we did it.
The knowledge and experience gained through the years have made me realize nothing is hopeless. It might not be what or how I imagined things would be, but we made it through and we can face any challenges that come our way.
I believe everything I have experienced in life, happened for a reason. That reason is to advocate for those that cannot alone.
Everyone should have a voice. It is my mission and privilege to see that everyone is heard and included in their care.
