Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My Patient Advocacy Story:
As a nurse and provider, I learned very quickly that there are huge gaps in healthcare between patients and their providers. Medicine and healthcare is truly a language all its own, and often very difficult to understand. Unfortunately, healthcare has changed over the years and providers are often overworked– forced to see patients in a very short period of time making it difficult to spend the time necessary to see the whole picture. That extra time is important to foster mutual trust to encourage open, honest communication where patients and families can feel free to ask questions and express concerns in a safe space. Even though healthcare has changed, the need for patient centered care has not. Patients still need and deserve our undivided attention and I found I was able to provide that extra time and individualized attention as an Independent Advocate and Integrity RN Advocates was founded on those principles.
