Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
Growing up as a child of a disabled single parent, it's needless to say that times were often dark and difficult for me, sis, and my mom. Often there was no food, sometimes no electricity, and definitely a lot of times there was no healthcare. My mouth full of metal and adult lazy eye is proof that routine healthcare just wasn't top of mind for a single-parent with schizophrenia trying to combat the voices while raising two young girls.

So when I became old enough to be taken a bit more seriously (around 5th grade) I decided I was old enough to step in and help mom out. I quickly learned how to get free lunch cards so sis and I could have at least one good meal per day; how to make sure we got the right health screenings and vaccines to ensure we could stay in school; and I quickly learned how to become friends with the case workers who stopped now and then "check on us girls". Through relationship building and some resilience, I made sure mom never missed that very important injection which kept her out of the hospital and at home where we needed her.

I guess it just became natural for me face a crisis head on and find the answers that worked for our little family. These qualities not only drove me towards my nursing career, they also led me to advocate for seniors without help; mentor teens aging out of foster care who also had little to no support; become the representative payee for mom when she could no longer make financial decisions for herself; and to advocate for countless friends, neighbors, and widows who found themselves in a health or social crisis with no idea where to turn.

I thank God for my uniquely blended gift of compassion, courage, empathy, and resilience that keeps me joyfully advocating for others. I'd be honored to share my gift with you and your family as your dedicated patient advocate.
