Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My journey to becoming a patient advocate is deeply personal, rooted in my own experiences with the healthcare system. Years ago, I found myself very ill, suffering from severe pain and swelling in my abdomen. Despite multiple visits to the ER, I was repeatedly told that there was nothing wrong, other than a diagnosis of constipation. However, I knew something wasn’t right. Luckily, I had a personal connection with the ER doctor and asked him to admit me for observation. Over the next five days, I endured extreme discomfort, unable to eat or drink without vomiting, my body swollen as if I were nine months pregnant. Although previous tests had cleared my gallbladder, I felt something wasn’t being addressed.

On the fifth day, as they prepared to discharge me, I insisted on seeing the general surgeon. Despite the nurses’ dismissive attitude, I stood my ground and told the surgeon exactly what I felt: a hard lump beneath my right rib, an inability to eat, and persistent vomiting. He acknowledged the possibility that nothing was wrong, but I insisted he perform surgery to investigate further. After the surgery, the surgeon informed my family that my gallbladder was dying, and infection was spreading throughout my body. He told my mom that I had essentially saved my own life by pushing for answers.

This experience, along with several others where I’ve had to advocate for loved ones, made me realize how crucial it is to have someone who can speak up and navigate the healthcare system on your behalf. If I hadn't had the knowledge and determination to advocate for myself, my outcome could have been very different. These personal experiences have shaped my passion for patient advocacy. I am deeply grateful to be in a position where I can help others avoid the challenges I faced, and provide the support and knowledge needed to ensure they get the care they deserve.

Professional Affiliations
With over half of my life dedicated to healthcare, I’ve had the privilege of working in a range of roles, each offering unique insights into the challenges faced by both patients and providers. I began my journey as a CNA, caring for individuals in nursing homes and providing in-home care as a teenager. This early experience laid the foundation for my career and passion for healthcare. From there, I transitioned into an X-ray tech role, trained as a medical assistant, and eventually developed a strong interest in medical coding and billing. Over time, I obtained certifications as a Certified Professional Coder, Certified Risk Adjustment Coder, and Certified Evaluation and Management Coder.

While working as a risk adjustment coder, I became involved in Clinical Documentation Improvement, where I conducted chart reviews and sent queries to providers to ensure patients received thorough follow-up care. This role exposed me to the inefficiencies within the healthcare system and highlighted the pressing need for better care coordination and advocacy.

Driven to make a more profound impact, I earned my Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration and transitioned into patient advocacy. In this role, I witnessed firsthand how alternative approaches, such as Functional Medicine, could transform lives—particularly when traditional medicine wasn’t providing the answers. Inspired to expand my expertise, I pursued certifications in Integrative Health, Herbalism, and Naturopathy, enabling me to guide individuals toward a more holistic approach to their well-being.

Today, I specialize in helping people navigate the complexities of the healthcare system through care coordination, chart reviews, providing or assisting with referrals, and providing support. I work closely with seniors on Medicare/Medicaid, supporting them through waiver programs, and offer assistance in attending medical appointments virtually. With experience spanning across various healthcare settings, I am committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of those I serve. Every step of my journey has been focused on improving patient outcomes, and I remain passionate about providing a compassionate, multi-faceted approach to healthcare.
