Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
From my youth to present I enjoyed helping people reach their established goals, whether it was helping my grandmother shopping and putting groceries away, reading publications to people who can no longer see well, managing prescriptions, or being their voice at doctor appointments. My love for people has been the impetus behind not only my career and educational path, but my way of living.
During High School I attended Nassau Tech Boces for their Medical Office Technology and Rehabilitation/Habilitation programs. In the Rehabilitation/Habilitation the students went to a few hospitals and A. Holly Patterson Nursing home. At A. Holly Patterson I was floated to the mental health section, I appreciated the work, patience and compassion that was needed to assist the residents understand the tasks they were to complete. I learned quickly I cannot use a one size fits all approach; it had to be tailored to the individual. This program heightened my interest in the Mental Health field, leading to my graduation from New York Institute of Technology Bachelor of Science Psychology program and CCM Certification.
Throughout the twenty plus years in the Social Service field, I have observed the difficulty many individuals have with navigating the healthcare system and maintaining their independence, especially those in the mental health community. These years of experience has allotted the opportunity for me to hone my reasoning, patient advocacy, and patience techniques. With the hunger for learning and improvement, I have been able to add the skills and techniques to my toolbox, such as Motivational Interviewing Techniques. Making use of the tools gained to empower individuals to unleash their inner gladiolus. I passionately believe that while words are powerful, actions speak volumes and give credibility to what is said, building a solid foundation of trust. It is my mission to promote optimum mental, emotional, physical health along with providing linkages to services that assist in building self-efficacy
