Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
When I was 16, my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. The following summer, at the nurse's station with a host of staff around, her physician addressed my aging grandparents, my dad and me and said, "Well, I give her 3 months." Then he walked away as we all stood stunned. I knew, even at that tender age, that the conversation was inappropriate. Since then, for the last 25 years, I've served in hospital systems as a leader of patient advocacy/relations, helping patients, families and guests find their way through complex situations.
