Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My journey into patient advocacy began with a conversation I didn't want to have. At twenty, my father urged me to consider my own end-of-life wishes. I thought he was discussing inheritance; he was actually teaching me about the autonomy of how we live and die. That lesson proved vital when I later stood by his bedside during his final moments with terminal prostate cancer. When the medical team moved to initiate CPR, I was able to intervene, honoring his explicit wishes and ensuring he passed with peace and dignity. It was a profound gift to witness and support my father’s final wishes.
My journey into advocacy began after I saw the sheer disorientation families experience during an acute medical crisis. Seeing families struggle with difficult diagnoses and end-of-life decisions, I realized my mission was to transform fear into a clear plan, protecting the quality of life for those navigating the system at their most vulnerable time in life.
