Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
As a nurse practitioner for almost 20 years, primarily in oncology, I have seen significant changes in the field of medicine over the years. Most of these are exciting and groundbreaking, but with increasing understanding of complex conditions and more treatment options and specialists comes confusion and overwhelm for patients and families in a time that can already be tumultuous. I have loved being extremely detailed and thorough with patients throughout my career and giving the very best care possible- even to my own detriment of not being able to finish my work until late hours. It has been worthwhile for me to know I am giving the most attention, listening extremely carefully to patients and providing them with answers in a detailed fashion, not leaving any stone unturned. However, I also know that many patients typically do not feel that their care translates this way and I want to be able to use my expertise and experience to help advocate for patients and help them navigate the complex healthcare system.
I also bring my personal experience advocating for myself as someone with multiple genetic mutations placing me at risk for cancer. Through my many surgeries and hospitalizations and the challenges I have faced, I have learned so much about the importance of advocacy and how to best guide patients through difficult times.
