I am a board-certified internist and cardiologist practicing in Arizona since 2005. Since that time, I have seen the US health care system become more complex for physicians to navigate, and it has become harder to obtain routine testing, and to provide adequate patient care. I see daily that it is very difficult for patients to navigate this health care system. I already serve as a patient advocate for my clinic patients, whether by helping direct them to proper specialty care providers, spending time with their insurance company to help get routine testing covered, or advising them on next steps for obtaining medical evaluation for health issues outside of my immediate specialty.
Patients and caregivers are overwhelmed by paperwork and legwork required to obtain routine care. Having someone with inside knowledge and connections within the health care system helps ease the burden.
