Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I didn’t set out to become a patient advocate — my path began with confusion and fear as I watched my mom navigate breast cancer when I was young. I remember sitting in appointments where nothing made sense, wishing someone would slow down and explain what was happening. That experience stayed with me and shaped everything that came after.
I pursued a doctorate in naturopathic medicine to better understand the body and treatment options, and later earned a Master’s in Public Health to learn how systems, access, and social factors impact care. I wanted to ask better questions, understand the “why” behind recommendations, and help others do the same.
I’ve seen these challenges in my own family and in my work as a case manager supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. I have repeatedly witnessed how overwhelming healthcare can be when you don’t have someone in your corner. I have also learned that people don’t just need information. They need someone who will stand beside them, help them ask the right questions, and make sure their voice is heard.
These experiences — personal, educational, and professional — led me to patient advocacy. I know what it feels like to sit in uncertainty, and I know how empowering it is when someone helps you find clarity. Being a patient advocate is my commitment to ensuring no one has to navigate their healthcare journey feeling alone, unheard, or unsure of their options.
