I am a survivor of Lupus, Fibromyalgia, POTs, Eczema, IBS
With a background in the Natural Sciences and over a decade of experience in Genetics Technology, I’ve spent years immersed in the details of how our bodies work. Combining that scientific knowledge with my lived experience, I founded Straight from the Heart Patient Advocacy to help others find clarity, confidence, and compassion in their healthcare journeys.
Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I know firsthand how exhausting and overwhelming the healthcare system can be. Years ago, I sought answers after a massage therapist suggested I might have Fibromyalgia. My doctor’s response was, "You’re not in enough pain."
Trusting the professional over my own body, I pushed through the pain for eight years—even on days when my hands hurt too much to hold a pen and I spent my lunch breaks napping in my car. When I finally received my diagnosis, it was bittersweet; I was relieved to have a name for my pain, but heartbroken over the years of treatment I had missed.
When I later began showing symptoms of Lupus, I faced similar dismissal despite a clear family history. This time, however, I chose a different path. Supported by a wonderful primary care physician, I took charge of my health and pushed for a referral to the specialists at UCSD. Because I advocated for myself early, I received a prompt diagnosis and have been able to manage my disease effectively with first-line therapy.
These experiences—along with navigating medical missteps and hospice care for loved ones—taught me that patients deserve more than just a diagnosis; they deserve to be heard and respected. I advocate because I want to ensure no one else has to wait eight years to be seen, heard, and cared for.
