Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I became a advocate and a activist after growing up in a very large extended family filled with grandmothers, great grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins. At a early age I learned a deep reverence for our elders and families. My youngest brother was born with a profound developmental disability and required round the clock care for his entire life. He was however born before the "Willowbrook Consent Degree" in New York State and there were little to no services for children like Michael. When he was only two years old (and I was 12) the pediatrician told my parents to institutionalize my baby brother. My parents said no and so began my path of being an advocate.
