Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
Insurance & Billing Advocate | Caregiver-Turned-Advocate
My advocacy journey began in 2016 when my mother became oxygen-dependent due to advancing COPD. For the next six years, I was her primary caregiver—navigating not just her health, but the complex systems that came with it.
Every appointment, every bill, and every insurance call came through me. I worked directly with her insurance carrier to ensure her Respiratory Therapy treatments were covered, confirming approvals before each session. I also coordinated local transportation resources and managed the logistics of getting her safely to and from appointments—ensuring her portable oxygen needs were always met.
My mother leaned on me not only for emotional support, but for clarity—understanding her diagnosis, what her treatment options were, and how her benefits worked. I reviewed every medical bill for accuracy, flagged issues, and followed up relentlessly to correct them.
Later, when my mother-in-law was diagnosed with dementia, I stepped in again—this time as a guide for my husband and his brother. I reviewed medical records and insurance claims, submitted appeals, and successfully extended her rehabilitation stay through persistent advocacy.
