Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
When I was 16 I was diagnoses with a very aggressive bone cancer. I had to undergo chemotherapy, radiation and amputation. I read everything to understand my condition and treatment and how the disease worked. I attended high school during this time. After high school I graduated from college and law school. I continued to follow the medical literature and learned that the radiation I had could cause breast cancer. I decided to have an elective double mastectomy in my mid-40s. Soon after, my husband had some odd lab results and I followed them and researched them until I persuaded his physician to do further testing. He was diagnosed with an extremely rare muscular dystrophy which surprised everyone but me. The information was there, but on one saw it. I continue to be surprised on a daily basis how many indicators, signs, warnings are overlooked in health. I am also dismayed by how difficult navigating the medical system is for many people. I work hard to push through the bureuacracy.
