Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My path to patient advocacy began straight out of college as a discharge planner and case manager for acute psychiatric patients in the greater East Tennessee area. As a former college athlete, I found juggling multiple patients, facilities, referrals and care plans surprisingly easy, albeit challenging. After raising my family in Connecticut and relocating to Florida, I spent several years as a behavioral health case manager where I coordinated the medical and psychiatric services for more than sixty clients at a time. In that role, I was given the title of Medical Coordinator due to my skills to accurately and efficiently coordinate medical appointments, transportation, prescription management, insurance, and link service providers, improving the healthcare access and outcomes for all sixty clients.
During this time, I watched my aging parents face chronic illness from long distance. Being so far away made me realize how vulnerable people can be when managing health challenges without the needed support to help coordinate care, ask the right questions, and advocate for their specific needs. I truly believe if I had been with my father to ask the right questions, the outcome of his latest and last cancer treatment would have been much different. This experience led me to seek board certification in patient advocacy and vowing to treat each patient as if they were one of my own family.
Living in Florida, I also began to witness friends attempt to manage medical issues with little to no family support. Studies have shown Florida is one of the worst states to "age in place" due to almost 40% of seniors living alone without support. I realized if I could see the need in my small friend circles, a greater need had to exist within my community.
Becoming a Board Certified Patient Advocate felt like a natural progression in my professional career. It allows me to combine my professional skills with my personal passion for helping people navigate healthcare with confidence, dignity, and the support required for the most vulnerable times in their lives.
