Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My father was diagnosed in 2023 with colorectal cancer and required surgery and chemotherapy. He had just retired from work. I went with him through various appointments and chemotherapy.
Although my father was well enough to ask questions and advocate for himself when needed; it was eye opening from a family member point of view how staff did not ensure patient understanding during appointments and instead relied on computer programs such as MyChart for any after visit information.
When my father’s COBRA insurance payment was late; he nearly did not receive treatment even after verifying payment was made. I realized having an advocate who only works for their client to ensure all options are given and for patients understand their options both medically and financially, is priceless and should be given as soon as possible.
