Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
As a nurse for over 40 years with extensive experience as a rehabilitation case manager, I have become more and more aware of the need for all persons to understand how to navigate our complex healthcare system. My passion as a nurse has always been to help people who are experiencing an acute or chronic health problem to receive the best care and treatment to improve their life and return to living a full life. I have assisted friends and family navigate their healthcare crisis; newly diagnosed disease; and chronic conditions for a number of years. I have also assisted my patients/clients as case manager with personal health issues, not just assisting them with their injury. Everyone deserves to receive the best health care and be respected and valued in a time of crisis or changing health status. I have found being a patient advocate to be rewarding and satisfying and to be able to make a difference in someone's recovery and their healthcare journey. Support, respect, and education can decrease the burden of individuals and caregivers in difficult times or crisis. Patient advocacy takes me back to the reason I became a nurse and allows me to put years of nursing experience in play to care for people who need healthcare treatment as well as a listening ear.
