Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
The reason I became an advocate is that I recognize the need for people to get the appropriate help, and difference it makes. The difficulty of navigating resources and complex and challenging healthcare system. Throughout the many years of serving patients in my career, I have seen first hand how difficult it is for patients to get the care they need. I have had the opportunity to help several patients including my elderly mother navigate the healthcare system, accessing community resources. My story started with about 3 years ago when my mother got sick, with her debilitating illness she was unable to navigate and coordinate appointments as well as finding community resources and support. I became an advocate for my mother, working through the complex system to nurture her back to health. Shortly after I moved to central Florida in a predominantly elderly population and quickly recognized the great need for nurse advocate among the elderly. I began to help my elderly neighbors also to find resources, schedule appointments and setting up home services and locating appropriate resources. This extended to other communities and other organization that I was involved in. It then became clear that being a nurse advocate is a passion, helping the elderly and those that are unable to get through this fast pace complex system is something I find joy doing.
