Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My journey into Patient Advocacy was when I cared for both of my parents during each of their cancer battles. My mother was diagnosed in April of 2019 with stage 4 lung cancer, she was understandably scared and confused on how to navigate her treatments and side effects; she needed me to support her and guide her during this scary time-let me tell you I learned a lot in the year I cared for her. A couple months after she passed, my step-father was also diagnosed with cancer. This was troubling, but I took the knowledge I gained from helping my mother, and dove into help him. He had to overcome multiple problems, from treatment-induced issues to surgical complications and hospitalizations. All the while I was in contact with all his providers and helped coordinate his care and educating him. It was when I began incorporating integrative and functional oncology medicine by finding him an integrative provider and making small lifestyle and dietary changes with supplements that I saw improvement in his condition. I truly feel that by incorporating integrative medicine into his life and slowly changing his lifestyle choices, his side effects from treatments have been reduced and his quality of life improved from what it was previously. I am still very much involved in his care today. I have learned so much from being an active part of their journeys; although I wish they would never have to go through these experiences, I feel honored to have made a difference in some way and it gave me the desire to make a positive difference in others’ lives as well.
