20 years as a Registered Nurse provided me with many experiences where Patients received poor care or were neglected. I have only been hospitalized once. After a motorcycle wreck EMS delivered me to a non-trauma emergency department where I waited 2.5 hours for an X-ray. After this I received multiple apologies for the delay. However, in the ICU the Surgical Specialist presented to tell me what was going to happen next. When I asked for alternatives, she said I was stupid if U didn’t follow her directions. I remained steadfast in my self advocacy and directed her to proceed with the alternative diagnostics and committed to returning to surgery as a last option. The Dr. and the staff became angry and unprofessional. One week later I presented to the Surgical Specialist’s office for review. She said, “I have never seen anyone heal this quickly from this injury.”

As an experienced nurse I was well prepared to advocate for myself. I realized during this experience, that other Patients do not have the experience, knowledge or resources to be effective self advocates. I am here to support the Patient’s rights.
