Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
As a seasoned nurse, it was priority to me to be sure the patient was being treated with respect, compassion, patience and understanding. I always felt that was a given responsibility as the nurse. Years passed and as our healthcare system evolved into a disjointed management of care, it was apparent that sometimes it's all very overwhelming for even the knowledgeable patient. As a nurse I saw the necessity of being the calm voice that would take a complex issue and explain in language more relatable to the patient. To be the voice to explain informed consent, to be the voice to allow patients the time they would need to process information, research all the options, and be able to make an unrushed or pressured decision about their care.
