Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I have been struggling with my health and learning the nuances of navigating the medical system for most of my adult life. I am chronically ill and a cancer survivor. Throughout the processes of getting diagnoses and treatments, I have seen some wonderful doctors – doctors who listen to my experience, respect my autonomy, and do everything they can to help me. I have also seen some doctors who are utterly dismissive. Through lived experience and terrifying necessity, I have learned the skills of medical advocacy.
I have been where you are. I know what it is to feel overwhelmed by a new diagnosis, to not be heard by a doctor I was counting on for relief, or to feel so lost in the system that I simply don’t know what to do next. Now I am turning those experiences into an opportunity to help. You don’t have to go through this alone.
