Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I have devoted more than 35 years to Maternal and Child Health, but my passion for this work began long before my career did. My own delivery was traumatic and frightening, and in those vulnerable moments I felt a kind of fear no woman should ever have to face. As I recovered, I watched other mothers—many of them women of color like me—experience pain, disrespect, and bias that left lasting scars. In those moments, I made a vow: no woman should ever suffer like this—not as long as I'm around.
That promise has guided every step of my journey. It’s the reason I show up with my whole heart, the reason I fight for dignity, equity, and compassionate care, and the reason I continue this work with unwavering commitment.
My lived experience, combined with decades of service, fuels my mission to ensure every mother—every family—receives the respect, safety, and love they deserve.
