Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I was blessed with a Grandson who was born with a rare genetic problem. He is currently 2 years old and deals with TSC which is Tuber Sclerotic Complex. TSC is where when the baby is developing in the womb and the DNA is dividing into the cells that they are supposed to develop into, one DNA cell did not develop the way it was supposed to and this is what caused the TSC to develop. There are only 11,000 patients in the world who have this rare genetic problem. I have watched his father and mother go through a lot of medical complexities and if they could have had a patient advocate who could have helped them with some of the decisions that needed to be made then my Grandson might have been farther ahead in his development than where he is now. He is “my why” for being an Independent Patient Advocate. If I can make a difference in helping them find someone (another Patient Advocate) to help them with my Grandson’s Care. I have watched my Daughter in law and Son go thru medicine after medicine to no avail in stopping the seizures that my Grandson has. He has been on 21 different medications, and he is still on the one medication that he has been on since he was 4 months old. I have been told that this medication is the strongest anti-seizure medication that is made and that the dose that he is on is an adult dose and they are weaning him off this medication. He is currently on a total of 5 medications, (soon to be back down to 4) and the Dr. is putting him on a new medication that will stop the seizures and allow him to get caught up on his development they are hoping. My Grandson went through surgery to remove the tubers on his brain and the Surgeon stated that my Grandson has over 60 tubers still left on his brain. They removed 30% of brain matter to which the temporal lobe was completely one tuber and had not developed when my Grandson was developing in his mother’s womb and that was part of the 30% that was removed. I learned from the Surgeon that my grandson's brain will compensate for what has been removed so he will still be able to live a very healthy life. Currently his parents are waiting on the Dr. from the TSC clinic to talk with them as they have a virtual appointment with the Dr. and my Grandson's mother is going to tell the Dr. that she is tired of watching her son being used as a lab experiment or as a case study. They feel as well as I do, that my grandson has just been an experiment for 2 years and there must be something that can be done for my grandson so that he can be caught up on all the milestones that he has missed in his 2 years of life so far. It is important to me that I help my patients with anything that they may need as I take my job very seriously and I will do the very best for my patient as they are very important to me.
