Medication Frustration
Are your medications overwhelming? Is it difficult to keep track of your loved ones' medications? Do you take your medications as ordered? Do you have a system in place ensuring that your medicine is organized so you do not miss a dose? If you are struggling, you are not alone. It is important to take control of your situation, in order to ensure you are taking your medicine as prescribed.
Make a list of your current medications. Make sure you have the correct name of the medication (both brand and generic names), dosage, and the time you take it. Include allergies and the reactions you have had to medications. Keep a copy of the list on you such as in your purse, wallet, or glove compartment. Make sure the list is current. Update it after every doctor's visit.
If you take several medications, use a pill box. There are all sorts of pill boxes on the market from once a day to four times a day. Pick one that works for you. If your doctor makes changes to your medication, immediately adjust your medications (that includes removing any medications your doctor tells you to stop) in your pill box to keep it current.
If the thought of filling a pill box overwhelms you, ask your pharmacist if they have blister packs. Some pharmacies will organize your medication daily or even by the time of day to prevent errors in filling the pill box.
If you are tech savvy, there are all sorts of pill reminder apps on the market. Check them out. They range from daily reminders to confirmation that you are taking your medicines.
The most important thing is for you to come up with a system and stick with it to avoid any medication error. Reach out to your doctor to find out what you should do if you miss a dose.
