Lisa Mclendon

My heartfelt passion for advocacy has been instilled from both years at the bedside of patients and from within my own family circle. For years I supported and cared for patients facing some of life’s scariest health crisis; stroke, cardiac crisis, heart failure, cancer diagnosis, psychosis and mental health changes. I've seen the invisible wounds carried by our veterans, and those who have suffered abuse and violence, reflected in their eyes and their incapacity to function in society. I’ve seen how health crisis, trauma, and care giver burn out reshapes lives. I've seen how our system fails in meeting the needs of those who are most vulnerable. It shifted my passion from bedside to advocacy. My own father’s journey has encompassed the acute care needs of a stroke survivor, the cognitive, behavioral and mood changes of a dementia patient, and the reality of the exorbitant cost of long term care. As a daughter and a nurse, I was heartbroken by his suffering, by the lack of compassionate care or clear guidance, and by the pure overwhelm of decisions, emotions, and financial strain. That experience lit a fire in me to offer my healthcare knowledge and long term planning knowledge to families in the midst of similar struggle. It taught me that true advocacy must go beyond physical wellbeing. It must embrace the emotional shifts, the cognitive and mood changes brought on by dementia, and the financial strain that becomes the realities that families face.
