My daughter was 8 and I was 32 when we were both diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder which had been impacting us our entire lives. But even after diagnosis, the next 10 years in rural Illinois with no patient communities or other resources made our journey far harder than it needed to be. If my girl and I could've had an advocate who understood dysautonomias - let alone the rest - when she was in high school or undergrad, that time in our lives could've been so different. I've been the patient, the parent, and now even the grandparent on the other side of the bed from the medical care team. I have seen first hand how an advocate can help someone else's journey be less difficult than ours.
