Medicare's New AI Gatekeeper
In 2026, the integration of artificial intelligence into Medicare operations involves a balance between administrative efficiency and beneficiary protection. Medicare is initiating a pilot in six states that utilize AI-powered systems to expedite prior authorization approvals and minimize bureaucratic delays, though advocacy groups emphasize that under the Jimmosettlement, coverage determinations must remain individualized rather than relying on «AI guesswork» or automated shortcuts. To promote responsible implementation among providers, CMS has added «Patient Safety in Use of Artificial Intelligence» as a new Improvement Activity within the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), while industry advisors simultaneously encourage Medicare Advantage plans to «activate decision intelligence» using AI for strategic insights.
